On the Surface -- Charles J. Andres

This is the second of two paintings done; the first was much darker as it was designed to be at night in the moonlight, as submarines typically surfaced after dark to avoid enemy detection.

The art director, wanted a painting done lighter since he "could read a newspaper by moonlight on Long Island". Given to a navy widow of a submarine officer.
